Best surfing destinations: top 3
1. Fuerteventura
Without leaving home, we can only start from Fuerteventura. The island offers a great variety of surf spots for all levels, favored by its geographical position as well as its conformation. These factors make it one of the best surfing destinations. Some of the best surfing spots in Fuerteventura are:
El Cotillo
This is one of the best beaches where to surf in Fuerteventura, and it’s suitable for all levels: beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers. This spot, being oriented to the west, doesn’t need a very big swell; on the contrary, the best conditions on this beach are met when the waves are medium-small, making this break a safe and reliable option for all surfers.
Isla de los lobos
Are you looking for the longest wave in Fuerteventura? Here it is, on the north of the island. This wave requires an advanced level of surfing, being a very technical wave with barrelling sections that will leave you speechless. The best time of the year to surf it is between October and March, when the direction of the swell comes from the north and north-west.
Playa del Moro
El Moro, a stunning beach made of golden sand that extends for 300 meters, is located in the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. Here, the waves are perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers that are seeking easy waves that break on a sandy bottom. The best time of the year to surf this wave is for sure during the summer months. Ah, and remember that Surfintrip is very close by to this location, so don’t hesitate to come and visit us.
Punta Blanca
Imagine a beach where you can surf and at the same time enjoy a wonderful bay with clear and calm waters! Well stop dreaming because Punta Blanca is exactly this. Punta Blanca, located on the north shore of the island, is a long and easy wave that peels on a seabad of volcanic rocks, perfect for all those beginners that wish to reach the next level of surfing in a safe environment. But be aware, because on the bigger days this spot can be affected by strong currents and is therefore not suitable for the inexperienced.
2. Marocco
Leaving Spain, Morocco is one of the best surfing destinations. Here you will find numerous spots suitable for all levels and with a cultural and gastronomic environment to enjoy. Let’s see the best spots in Morocco:
Tamraght and Taghazout
This area is famous for its waves for both beginners and experts, ideal to visit from October to April. Tamraght, with its traditional atmosphere and international surfing community, offers panoramic views of the Atlantic. Taghazout, known as a surfing paradise, home to long and absolutely perfect waves, is a favorite spot for intermediate and advanced surfers. There are numerous spots in the area and among these we can count on Anchors, Boilers, Tamri, Spider, Croco, Hash Point, Mysteries, Devil’s Rock, Killer Point, Panorama, Banana Beach and La Source.
Essaouira
This beach is ideal for beginners thanks to its waves with left and right peaks, easy and perfect for learning with a soft sandy bottom, although it is suitable for all levels with northerly winds. In addition to surfing, Essaouira offers hiking, souks and local cuisine.
Tifnit
Located in the natural park of Sous Massa, Tifnit is a less crowded place but with consistent waves that will make you fall in love with the place. With defined peaks and exposure to northerly winds, it is suitable for all levels. It is advisable to pay attention to the conditions and wind forecasts before surfing here as you may not find the right conditions.
3. Maldivas
Surfing in the Maldives is something that every lover of this sport should do, it is an unforgettable experience. The beauty of the area, the peace, the immensity and the perfection of the waves make this, without a doubt, one of the best surfing destinations.
North Malé Atolls
One of the most popular options due to the waves present all year round, but particularly good from May to October. The prevailing winds from the west and south-west create ideal conditions for enjoying the area. It is important to note that the North Male Atolls can get crowded due to their popularity.
Himmafushi
Himmafushi area is one of the best surfing areas in the Maldives. One of the best known waves in this area is jailbreak, in the English version it would be ‘escape from prison’. This reef, located in the north area of Malé, is exposed to the best swells from May to October and the biggest ones arrive during the months of July, August and September, when the waves can reach 6/8 feet.
Why was it given that name? It owes to the old prison that is located on this atoll. The jailbreak wave has several sections and, depending on your positioning, you can surf both open and soft walls, perfect for maneuvering, and respectable steep and fast sections.
Thamburudhoo
The uninhabited island of Thamburudhoo, near Velidhoo, is one of the most peculiar, its beach glows in the dark! This happens thanks to bioluminescence, i.e. the ability of the living beings on the island to produce light: its phytoplankton glow in the dark when it comes in contact with oxygen.
On this island we will find other epic places to surf in the Maldives, the famous Honky’s and Sultan. Honky’s is a left reef wave that goes around the island and increases in size as it reaches an inland point renamed “Fred’s Ledge” by local surfers.
The best time to surf Honky’s is at low tide, although you can surf on all tides. Sultans sits next to Honky’s and is one of the most consistent right hand waves in the Maldives. Indeed, there is always something to surf in Sultans and when a swell arrives, characteristic of the season which runs from May to October, you can not only appreciate an open wall ideal for maneuvers but also the last section with a large tube.
The typical size of the waves of Sultans ranges from 3 to 5 feet, but can easily reach 6 to 8 feet when a large swell hits this reef. The ideal tide is the mid-rise tide. Sultan’s right on one side and Honky’s left on the other make this little islet into the place you’ve always dreamed of.
Thulusdhoo
Thulusdhoo is a local island of the Maldives and is considered one of the best surfing spots in the Maldivian islands. The island is home to the two best known and most popular waves in the Maldives, Cokes and Chickens. Cokes, considered the most powerful wave in this area, is a world class right hand wave offering steep and barrel sections. The ideal condition occurs with a swell coming from southeast and local winds from southwest.
Like Chickens’ spot, it’s best at mid or high tide, especially when the dreaded current is a little more forgiving. Cokes has two really good sections, which provide a constant short refuge from the hot Maldivian sun! The first section that breaks in the outside is steep and sometimes offers a fast tube while the second section, when the conditions are right, offers an even wider tube that approaches the shallow reef. That’s why it is only suitable for advanced and experts.
Chickens is a long left with fast sections and is accessible even for an intermediate level on smaller days. Chickens basically has two main sections. The second section is more vertical and can offer good tubes while the first section tends to be steep only if the wind doesn’t interfere. A local wind from northwest and a swell from southeast create the best conditions and give rise to the maximum potential of this wave. Cokes is accessible directly from the atoll while a short 5 minutes navigation is required to get to Chickens.
